Project Based Classes

An opportunity to learn through making — a project from start to finish.

Some of the most effective learning happens when there is something real at stake — a piece of furniture taking shape at the bench, decisions to be made, problems to be solved. Project classes are built around exactly that. Working as part of a small group over two to five consecutive days, you will take a piece from raw timber to finished object, guided through every stage of the process.

The projects are chosen because of what they teach as much as what they become. A traditional tool chest, a knock-down workbench, a Shaker side table — these are forms with a long history in the workshop, and each one draws on a broad range of hand tool skills, joinery, and decision-making that stays with you well beyond the class itself.

The making is the lesson.

What to Expect

Project classes move at pace. Over consecutive days there is a natural rhythm to the work — early sessions spent on layout and preparation, later days on joinery and assembly, with the satisfaction of a finished piece at the end. Working alongside others in the same process adds a different dimension to the learning, and there is plenty of time throughout for questions, discussion, and the kind of peripheral lessons that arise naturally when a real project is underway.

Because these classes involve sustained, structured work over multiple days, a reasonable level of existing hand tool ability is expected. Prerequisites are listed individually for each project. If you are unsure whether your current skills are a good fit, get in touch — it is always worth a conversation before booking.
