My name is Ryan Saunders.
I am an independent furniture maker and instructor based in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Good woodworking isn’t about relying on complex procedures or accumulating shelves of specialised gadgets. It comes from understanding the core principles: how timber moves and behaves, how an edge tool actually engages with the wood, and how to work with patience, precision, and intent.

Whether I am designing a piece of furniture for a client or standing alongside someone at the workbench as they experience what a truly sharp hand plane can do, the philosophy remains the same: understand the material in front of you, take the time to do things properly, and enjoy the quiet satisfaction of honest craft.
Learning to work wood with hand tools can often feel intimidating, particularly with the noise of conflicting advice and quick fixes online.
My teaching is designed to cut through that.

Instruction in the workshop is unhurried, practical, and focused entirely on sound fundamentals. Before any student attends their first class, we talk—either in person or over the phone—to discuss where you are on your woodworking journey, what tools you are using, and what you want to achieve. That way, our time at the bench is tailored and productive.

If you struggle with a concept or a cut, we don’t rush past it — we look at it from another angle, sketch out the mechanics, and try different physical approaches until it clicks. You leave not just with a piece of work, but with the confidence to walk into your own space and work independently.

Alongside teaching, I design and make furniture and fine woodwork to commission. Every piece is built to order using thoughtfully selected materials, traditional joinery, and finishes that age gracefully with everyday use.
